“ALONG THE LINES” with Jorge Rivas and Allison Ponthier

Model Features

How does the old adage go? “Don’t reinvent the wheel?” “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it?”

Although that may apply in some situations, that never applies to beauty! Especially eyeliner.

In this session photographed in New York City by my talented friend and photographer Jorge Rivas, we explore the possibilities of angles and lines. I have always been drawn to the need of making things symmetrical and then turning around to destroy it. It’s a known issue and I’m working on it:)

Liner is one of the easiest ways to “dress up” your face. Feline flicks. avant garde geometry, dots, smokey, vertical, diagonal. The possibilities are endless. It is my belief that every woman can wear liner when the correct one is chosen for their eye shape and occasion. One thing that helps me understand trends is looking at catwalk photos.

The looks can be minimal or full on lined. That is up to you. Here are a few tricks I find help me and that will help you ease the nerves.

1.If you end up with wings that don’t match up, start by drawing two dots at the point where you want your liner to END. As you line, you will know exactly where you have to end the lines when you draw them.

2. Make sure you chose the correct product and tool for you. If you want a diffused liner like this, a soft crayon liner or shadow will do the trick. Make sure to blend into the lash line with a cotton bud for better staying power and polished feel. My favorite soft pencils are NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via De Martelli for a soft cool brown shadow and Chanel Le Crayon Yeaux in Noir for a creamy pencil that glides along the sensitive water line.

If you want a bolder and sharper look, try using a liner pen like Maybelline Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner. The advantage to this is that you can just use it as you would any writing utensil to create precise lines. To create more abstract lines or shapes, a gel cream liner with angled brush like Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner is perfect.

image

The newest trend in eyeliner is “tight lining”. This involves lining the inner rim of the eyes to create a deep and sooty look. Try using a waterproof and safe for the inner eye product like Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner. Raise your chin and place your nondominant index finger above the outer corner of your eye, lifting upward. Then, holding the pencil vertically in your other hand, trace back and forth under your lashes. Go over it a few times, and stop before you reach the inner corners to ensure your eyes don’t look closed off and tiny. Repeat on the bottom rim and finish with a healthy dose of volumizing mascara.

3. Darken the roots of your top lashes. Gently pull your top lid taut by pressing one finger on the outer corner. Bury the tip of the pencil deep into your lashes at the outer corner of your eye, wiggling it back and forth as you move inward. Take your time and don’t be afraid to really mash the tip into your lashes.

If you move during the tricky lining part or make the lines too thick for your taste, don’t fret. It’s just makeup! I LOVE to clean up with Almay Oil Free Makeup Eraser Sticks. They are in a convenient cotton bud solution and will not disturb the rest of your makeup.

Now that you know the pro tips and tricks, please enjoy this session as we did while creating it!

Allison Ponthier, of RE:Quest Models NYC, has perfect skin! In order to prepare her for her closeup, I cleansed the skin with my favorite micellar water, KohGenDo Spa Water and Organic Cotton and moisturized with Kensignton Apothecary Pure Soothing Facial Oil #3.

Vivacious. Flirty. Edgy.

These are some of the feelings that Nina Shaw evoked during our latest session photographed by Samantha Beatty.

Rich and textured clothing curated by Carlos Parada of OnSet Management set the tone for a beautiful and demure palette. Soft leather, shiny gold, fluffy wool, and structured silks created a backdrop for exotic hair and makeup looks.

nina_11

Satin shadows in muted brown based violets were paired with a nude glossy lip to complement the structured look.  For this I used Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad in Disco Dust. Shape the eye by concentrating the darkest tone of this palette along the lashline and outer corner of the eye.

_11777438

Reminiscent of Naomi Campbell during the glamorous decade of the supermodel, we decided to amp up the look in with a dramatic smokey eye and wine colored gloss.  My favorite of the moment is Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer in Night Berry. I love the hybrid technology of a lip gloss, stain, and lipstick this product offers. The shade range is beautiful as well.

3614270619557_Ecstasy-Lacquer_200

Juxtaposing a shattered and weathered bob against the sumptuousness of this ostrich leather dress by Alice and Olivia was one of my favorite highlights of this session.  In order to achieve this arid and collapsible hair texture, I power blow dried the hair using Bumble and bumble Surf Spray in order to give a gritty and almost sand weathered texture.  The hair was then detailed with Kevin Murphy Rough.Rider for a strong and super matte hold.

Summer is finally starting to settle in. Bright and long sunny days make it so easy to enjoy the outdoors and have a more laissez-faire attitude towards beauty.

We recently worked with beautiful Elizabeth in a series showcasing lovely and feminine clothing in a setting that was like a small Secret Garden. Photographed by Shannon Touchstone and styled by Danielle Brown, Elizabeth easily transitioned into a very soft and almost playful self.

Because we were photoshooting outside in very humid weather, I decided to work with nature’s canvas and utilize the dewiness in her skin and flyaways to add a carefree almost bohemian feel to her look.

Her hair was was prepped with Bumble and Bumble Prep Spray and City Swept Spray to reveal texture, prime it for the waving wand heat, and to add a bit of weight.

image

image

The hair was then waved with a Paul Mitchell Neuro Unclipped 1.25″ Cone counterclockwise in the same direction away from the face beginning at the front hairline.

image

image

The hair was then finger raked to loosen the waves. I added two pumps of Wella Oil Reflections to add shine, reveal highlights and lowlights in her hair color and to add a bit of polish. I also used this lightweight non greasy oil on her legs and arms for a subtle glow.

image

Elizabeth has great skin and I wanted to enhance with a bit solar protection and color. I used Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium in the center of the face and shade Medium/Deep on the perimeter of the face to add a bit of lived in tan effect.

image

image

The lips and cheeks were tinted with YSL Volupte Tint-In-Oil in shades Drive Me Copper and Oh My Gold. I love these lip tints for a sheer wash of color with a non sticky feel. No lipliner needed!

image

Summer is all about being social with a casual and easy breezy feel. I hope you enjoy these products as much I did!

VINTAGE BEAUTY WITH A MODERN TAKE

Model Features

There seems to a bit of nostalgia in every generation. The Roaring Twenties alluded to the Belle Époque while Post WWII America desperately tried to garner glamour in a way we have yet to see again in my opinion.

Dressing was not only necessary but an ultimate form of manners. Polite society was coiffed, pressed, and polished. Everyone followed suit regardless of socioeconomic differences.

One of my favorite resources of inspiration is to refer to vintage and retro cosmetic ads. They offer a hyper feminine point of view to me.

image

image

image

image

image

During this mini series photographed by Roy Choudhury, I wanted to explore a color palette reminiscent of these images with slightly different placement. Our model, Mary Alexandra, offered a perfect canvas for this.

Using YSL Pure Chromatics Quad in #6, I contoured the middle and outer portion of the eye to offer a more rounded shape to the eye.

image

A gentle slope in the winged liner anchored the look.

image

Variations in tones and palette allowed me to create different looks and feels.
A healthy application of YSL Lipstick Pur in Le Orange was an update to the tried and true blue based red.

image

image

image

Lastly, a deep aubergine and plum lip stick custom mixed by mixing a bit of black pencil eyeliner into a classic red.

I hope you enjoyed this series as much as we did while creating it. Try these combinations on your next look!

I love when spontaneous photoshoots happen. They allow a group of creatives to come together with no strings attached and the end goal of making a beautiful image.

We recently worked with Chris Ossenfort, a fabulous photographer here in Dallas, Texas. Our subject for the day was handsome Trevor Burchett, who also happens to be represented by The Campbell Agency.

We delved into several layers of a gentleman’s persona. Suave, relaxed, urban, and groomed.

Trevor’s hair is cut in an undercut with an extreme side part. His texture is on the coarse side with has great wave pattern to it. I decided to prep the hair with Bumble and Bumble Prep to encourage texture and prime it for product. I then diffused it on low heat and scrunched it with my fingers. I love this product because it shapes effortlessly. I then smoothed a bit of Privé Crème Coiffante to polish and hold.

image

image

image

Skincare for men is a big deal. Men don’t have the advantage of having a full makeup routine so in order to put the best face forward, we need to take care of our skin. My favorite moisturizer is Elemis Moisture Boost. It is very light and is full of natural ingredients such as Cactus Cerus Oil and Bamboo natamilk to soothe and protect skin.

image

Got a blemish or party too hard over the weekend? A pro concealer is great way to perfect your complexion. I know what you’re thinking. Makeup? On a guy? Yes! As long as you choose a correct formula that is in your skin tone and non visible. My favorite one to use is Estée Lauder Double Wear Brush On Concealer . You only need a dot of this product on already moisturized skin. Make sure you pat it in gently with your ring finger to ensure it is blended into the skin.

image

Be groomed and enjoy the series!

How to travel with your beauty kits

Pro Tips/ How-to's

I just returned from shooting a campaign with a dear client in Laguna Niguel, California. The weather and views are permanently burned into my brain. Utterly beautiful!

image

image

image

What I wish was equally as beautiful is the stress of packing a respectable session kit and not worrying about leaving important tools behind. Even more terrifying would be that something would break or spill.

The TSA does not allow liquids, sharp objects, or aerosols on your carry on which means you will have to check your bag. Depending on the carrier, this can make you incur charges for each flight. The weight limit of each bag is 50 lbs with charges of $100+ for weight overages PLUS the check bag fee. Insane. I know!

I have traveled before with only a makeup kit or only a hairstyling kit. This trip required both which meant a lot of tools. Heavy tools. With the help of my assistant, I decided to use two luggage bags and disperse the weight evenly to avoid additional charges.

Take a look at some smart packing tips I learned along the way!

image

image

I learned to use zipper bags to compactly store hair products. This ensures that they stay securely flat and if one were to spill or burst, it is contained. My go to bags for hair products are the Züca Large Utility Bags. They are sturdy and surprisingly fit a large quantity of hair products.

I prefer KatKit Road Aircraft Bags for makeup for their beautiful compartments.

image

I like to keep my brushes stored upright as I work in order to maximize my counter space. This caddy has been a life saver since I am able to carry my used brushes back home in one container. That way I can leave the unused brushes in my brush belt and take this canister into the studio and sanitize the used ones. The Dany’s Pouch by Makeup Forever is affordable and a great size.

image

image

The scariest thing for me is to either run out of a product or it breaking in transit. I learned to roll my foundation bottles in padded bubble wrap and then placing them into a clear bag by KaitKat. Works perfectly!

image

I have learned to pack a magnet strip in my kit to securely hold bobby grips, clips and needles while I am on set. This minimizes the need to carry tons of pins and frees up space while on set. This one a kitchen knife magnet from Food Service Warehouse.

image

If my job calls for involved hairdressing,  I will travel with a tackle box from the hardware store to keep my grips and pins separate and ready to go.

image

image

I like to use jewelry holder bags that have compartments and a hook on the end to hang off a table or door while working. This one is The Resort Hanging Bag by The Container Store.  I like to store combs, razors, neck strips for haircuts, capes, and clippers. I also use them for makeup disposables like cotton buds, cotton pads, and mascara wands.

Have you ever packed your brush belt only to find that ALL of your brushes have made their way out into your luggage? Ziploc bags are perfect for traveling. Secure your brush belt and avoid your brushes flying everywhere by storing it one.

image

image

I always travel with extensions and wigs and I used to carry them in their original packaging.

image

Now, I like to store wigs, padding, or hair filler in Ziploc bags. They also keep your brushes intact and out of the way.

image

I always have to give a trim or cut a wig on set therefore I have to travel with my shears and razors. I keep mine safe in a pencil pouch from the office supply store.

image

Simple makeup cases from the drug store make a great place to store multiple palettes and products. This particular one was a gift from Lancôme Cosmetics but the SoHo Case by Target is the virtually the same. I stack my Z-Palettes for shadows and lip colors all in the bottom compartment. The rest is packed with pots, stick concealers, and smaller palettes.

image

image

image

One of the easiest things to do to save space is to properly wind up your tool cords. This makes them compact and protects the cord itself from bending. I love using Velcro Cord Ties in different colors to easily identify my tools.

image

Velcro is a life saver! I used the roll of it and sewed one strip to the lining of my luggage and stuck the matching side to the plastic clear bag to avoid them shuffling during transit. It’s a neat way to maximize the use of your space.

image

Try adding Velcro strips to your mirror as shown so it won’t shift. I placed it inside a makeup bag similar to the one mentioned above. This option allows me to carry a full sized mirror to have on set.

image

image

This same type of case holds my skincare products. I keep them separate from my powders (ie: shadows, pressed powders, pigments) to avoid disaster. I bought mine from http://www.katkitroad.com.

image

Instead of traveling with multiple heavy curling irons, I invested in a set of ceramic wands that feature interchangeable rods. This way, I can roll 3 irons in one simple method. Check out NuMe Curling Wand Sets for an awesome value.

image

image

If you must travel with a lot of lashes, I recommend removing the majority of the plastic packaging and collapsing them onto one another as shown. I keep one plastic cover to keep the front one sanitized. I then load them into a rectangle zip bag also from KatKit.

image

image

Lastly, I always pack my go-bys, inspiration, tear sheets, and face charts so I can have them available on set with me. Keep your magazines together in a cardboard holder as shown. I buy tons of them at the $1 aisle at Target. I place all of my tears and face charts in a file folder and into the same magazine holder.

image

Phew!! Now, if I could only find a solution to not procrastinating….

Happy travels!

Simple. Free. Not overworked. Beauty.

These are the adjectives we wanted conjure when we worked with Lily.  Photographed by Sergio Garcia with hair and makeup by yours truly, we were able to create fresh and ethereal looks that showed off our muse’s beauty.

Hair texture was created by misting Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray on dry hair.  This encouraged the natural wave pattern to come forth. After letting it dry, I had the model flip her hair over and generously sprayed Bumble and Bumble Cityswept Spray.

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

For this look, I created a deep on side part to create a “faux” side swept fringe effect. The hair was secured into a low ponytail and wrapped into a simple bun. To add high shine and smooth flyaways, I added a bit if brillantine by Bumble and Bumble.

There is powerful beauty in simplicity. In rawness and barely-there nuances. It attracts light and shows the power within and the vulnerability of one’s body.

This is the route we chose when photographing Alencia Lewis courtesy of The Campbell Agency.

I customized a beauty look with highly moisturized skin, foundation warmed up with my fingers and pressed into the skin, and simple hair.

Creme stick foundations in Golden Honey, Walnut, Mahogany,  and Espresso by Bobbi Brown Cosmetics were seamlessly blended for a sculpted effect.

image

The skin on the rest of the body was moisturized by combining Josie Maran Argan Oil, African Glycerin, and gold loose eyeshadow.

I hope you enjoy this series!

“GREEK GODDESS” for Fashion Scoop Daily.com

Published Editorials

Platinum. 18 karat gold. Topaz. Opal. Rhododite. Tourmaline. Garnets. Amethysts. Diamonds!

Sounds dreamy right? Well, they are!

I had the privilege of working with a talented team on this editorial in order to radiantly capture the bold and exquisite designs of Kerri Halpern of Madstone Design,  In collaboration with Nine Eighteen Boutique, Edgar Gomez, the art director and stylist for the day, developed a story to showcase these beautiful pieces.

The collection was based on and inspired by Greek Mythology.  Poseidon. Apollo. Ares. Persephone. Medusa. Athena. All of my favorite mythical deities from my books as a kid.  Of course I had to be a part of this project!

The goal was to evoke a Greek goddess encapsulating the different traits of each god.  Jordan Raines’ beauty was easily a fit for such a timeless piece.

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 5.20.36 PM

My inspiration for the beauty piece in this story was golden wreaths, waterfalls, rope, and wind moving through hair.

Jordan’s face was prepared with Laura Mercier’s Radiance Primer for an effortless glow.  Foundation Primer_Radiance on White

To enhance the glow and give an ethereal flush, I used one of my favorite products NARS Multiple in Portofino. This multipurpose stick has a creamy consistency and may be used on more than one area of the face.  I gently tapped a bit on the apples of her cheek with my ring finger for an innocent flush.  I patted a generous amount on the center of her lips as to evoke the feeling of having just eaten a cluster of red grapes. Finally, I blended a small amount through her eye crease to warm up and brighten the eye area.

62597151c7444f05a266af6fa58e8ba5

After a light coating of mascara, I lined the lash line lightly with Dior Addict- It Line Liquid Liner in Black.

ZtivMse

Textured waves were created with a tapered wand and Bumble and Bumble Spray de Mode.  I love it because it has heat protection abilities, memory, and a light brushable hold that will withstand rapid hair changes and movement. The hair transitioned from loose waves to emulate the waves of Poseidon, a braided coiff to channel Athena, and a halo braided crown to personify Ares. Medusa was brought to life by gathering her hair into a regal updo and allowing tendrils to fall as I wove an 18 karat gold necklace through her curls as a diadem.

I recently had the pleasure of working with this lovely young lady on a series including beauty, fashion, and a little attitude.

As an ode to the ending summer, we decided to fabricate a session showcasing breezy and airy fashion provided by Tor Matthey.  The clean and simplistic lines are powerful in each shot.  The have a touch of minimalism and feminism all mixed into one.

The subtle movements that Cadence exuded were perfect and made her seem effortless in such structured clothing. To complement the color palette, I utilized white and mint as my focal points.  I used MAC Chromaline Gel/Cream Liner in Pure White and an angled liner brush.

MC9201

As a highlight and pop, I used Seafoam Green from Dior’s 5 Coulers Couture Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Jardin.

covers_sku-Y0148400-F014840456

To keep the beauty story cohesive and on trend, I used Maybelline’s Color Show Nail Lacquer in Green With Envy.

06e5fdf0778cc8b7fefa50857b2008ac

Cadence has beautiful undercut that required minimal product. In the slides that have more texture, I used Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray which has sea salt for beautiful lived in beachy texture.  On the smoother slides, I misted the hair with water and groomed it with a dime sized amount of Brilliantine by Bumble and Bumble for shine and structure.

I am anxious for fall and with this session we start bidding adieu to summer. I hope you enjoy this set as much as I do!
