“The Lazy Group” in collaboration with Morgan Chidsey

Model Features

I personally love this time of year because the weather is on the verge of changing.  There are cooler mornings and warmer days. It’s time to wear your favorite sweater for the last chance in a while.

With it comes along a laissez-faire attitude towards beauty as well. Undone and textured hair is perfect for spring. Tousled locks go perfectly with a statement color that matches your favorite bloom.

Teaming up with romantic photographer Morgan Chidsey and wardrobe stylist Britta Newton proved to be fun, easy, and fresh.  We were able to work on a set with four models courtesy of The Dragonfly Agency and The Kim Dawson Agency.  Chloe, Delaney, Christina, and Kalli all portrayed an cool and chic mood.

I used the same hair products throughout the series and challenged myself to see what it could do.  I used a cocktail of Privé Vanishing Oil, Weightless Amplifier, and Finishing Texture Spray to add shine, heat protection,  add bounce, and pliability.

image

image

image

I added the products to Kalli’s hair and roughly blowdried until dry. With a 1″ iron, I took vertical sections and alternated the curl making sure to not leave the hair for longer than 5 seconds. After releasing from the tongs, I immediately raked the curls with my fingers and tugged on each curl. I wanted texture not curl.

image

image

image

On Christina, I decided to take the same approach as I did on Kalli. I parted the hair with a weighty center part and decided to not alternate the direction of the waves for a more elongated and concise formation.

image

image

image

I followed the same pattern and product usage on Delaney to further test the fact that the same products and hair tools can yield slight variations. For Delaney, I opted to use a 1 1/2″ barrel iron which created a slight bend in the hair. Some of her outfit changes had high collars, so I wrapped the hair into a perfectly imperfect French roll.

image

image

image

I was amazed that using the same cocktail of products yielded such a different effect on Chloe. Her hair is very straight and is of medium texture. I decided to skip the curling iron and let her texture shine through.

image

image

image

I hope that you enjoy the rest of the film. I loved how each model shines through and there is an even composition in colors and textures. The hairstyles and minimal makeup allow for each model to have subtle differences and stand alone as well as in a group.

I absolutely love working with models time and time again. I get to revisit their energy and face and appreciate nuances that I didn’t focus on the last time we worked together.

Such is the case with stunning Kelly. The last photo session I worked with her on featured more avant garde hair and shapes.

I teamed up with genius photographer Nicollette Mollet and created a quick set of minimalist images for Kelly’s portfolio this go around.

I began by prepping Kelly’s hair using Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray at the root and blow drying with my fingers. After it was dry, I layered another coat thru the midshaft and ends.

image

image

image

To add variety, I added a deep side part as inspired by my last bit of runway shows in New York for Autumn/Winter 2015. I added a bit of Bumble and Bumble Thickening Créme Contour to the hair after I warmed it up in my hands. This amplified the hair towards the ends but collapsed the volume at the scalp.

I hope you enjoyed the film as much as we did!

I love when spontaneous photoshoots happen. They allow a group of creatives to come together with no strings attached and the end goal of making a beautiful image.

We recently worked with Chris Ossenfort, a fabulous photographer here in Dallas, Texas. Our subject for the day was handsome Trevor Burchett, who also happens to be represented by The Campbell Agency.

We delved into several layers of a gentleman’s persona. Suave, relaxed, urban, and groomed.

Trevor’s hair is cut in an undercut with an extreme side part. His texture is on the coarse side with has great wave pattern to it. I decided to prep the hair with Bumble and Bumble Prep to encourage texture and prime it for product. I then diffused it on low heat and scrunched it with my fingers. I love this product because it shapes effortlessly. I then smoothed a bit of Privé Crème Coiffante to polish and hold.

Skincare for men is a big deal. Men don’t have the advantage of having a full makeup routine so in order to put the best face forward, we need to take care of our skin. My favorite moisturizer is Elemis Moisture Boost. It is very light and is full of natural ingredients such as Cactus Cerus Oil and Bamboo natamilk to soothe and protect skin.

image

Got a blemish or party too hard over the weekend? A pro concealer is great way to perfect your complexion. I know what you’re thinking. Makeup? On a guy? Yes! As long as you choose a correct formula that is in your skin tone and non visible. My favorite one to use is Estée Lauder Double Wear Brush On Concealer . You only need a dot of this product on already moisturized skin. Make sure you pat it in gently with your ring finger to ensure it is blended into the skin.

Be groomed and enjoy the series!

How to travel with your beauty kits

Pro Tips/ How-to's

I just returned from shooting a campaign with a dear client in Laguna Niguel, California. The weather and views are permanently burned into my brain. Utterly beautiful!

image

image

image

What I wish was equally as beautiful is the stress of packing a respectable session kit and not worrying about leaving important tools behind. Even more terrifying would be that something would break or spill.

The TSA does not allow liquids, sharp objects, or aerosols on your carry on which means you will have to check your bag. Depending on the carrier, this can make you incur charges for each flight. The weight limit of each bag is 50 lbs with charges of $100+ for weight overages PLUS the check bag fee. Insane. I know!

I have traveled before with only a makeup kit or only a hairstyling kit. This trip required both which meant a lot of tools. Heavy tools. With the help of my assistant, I decided to use two luggage bags and disperse the weight evenly to avoid additional charges.

Take a look at some smart packing tips I learned along the way!

image

image

I learned to use zipper bags to compactly store hair products. This ensures that they stay securely flat and if one were to spill or burst, it is contained. My go to bags for hair products are the Züca Large Utility Bags. They are sturdy and surprisingly fit a large quantity of hair products.

I prefer KatKit Road Aircraft Bags for makeup for their beautiful compartments.

image

I like to keep my brushes stored upright as I work in order to maximize my counter space. This caddy has been a life saver since I am able to carry my used brushes back home in one container. That way I can leave the unused brushes in my brush belt and take this canister into the studio and sanitize the used ones. The Dany’s Pouch by Makeup Forever is affordable and a great size.

image

image

The scariest thing for me is to either run out of a product or it breaking in transit. I learned to roll my foundation bottles in padded bubble wrap and then placing them into a clear bag by KaitKat. Works perfectly!

image

I have learned to pack a magnet strip in my kit to securely hold bobby grips, clips and needles while I am on set. This minimizes the need to carry tons of pins and frees up space while on set. This one a kitchen knife magnet from Food Service Warehouse.

image

If my job calls for involved hairdressing,  I will travel with a tackle box from the hardware store to keep my grips and pins separate and ready to go.

image

image

I like to use jewelry holder bags that have compartments and a hook on the end to hang off a table or door while working. This one is The Resort Hanging Bag by The Container Store.  I like to store combs, razors, neck strips for haircuts, capes, and clippers. I also use them for makeup disposables like cotton buds, cotton pads, and mascara wands.

Have you ever packed your brush belt only to find that ALL of your brushes have made their way out into your luggage? Ziploc bags are perfect for traveling. Secure your brush belt and avoid your brushes flying everywhere by storing it one.

image

image

I always travel with extensions and wigs and I used to carry them in their original packaging.

image

Now, I like to store wigs, padding, or hair filler in Ziploc bags. They also keep your brushes intact and out of the way.

image

I always have to give a trim or cut a wig on set therefore I have to travel with my shears and razors. I keep mine safe in a pencil pouch from the office supply store.

image

Simple makeup cases from the drug store make a great place to store multiple palettes and products. This particular one was a gift from Lancôme Cosmetics but the SoHo Case by Target is the virtually the same. I stack my Z-Palettes for shadows and lip colors all in the bottom compartment. The rest is packed with pots, stick concealers, and smaller palettes.

image

image

image

One of the easiest things to do to save space is to properly wind up your tool cords. This makes them compact and protects the cord itself from bending. I love using Velcro Cord Ties in different colors to easily identify my tools.

image

Velcro is a life saver! I used the roll of it and sewed one strip to the lining of my luggage and stuck the matching side to the plastic clear bag to avoid them shuffling during transit. It’s a neat way to maximize the use of your space.

image

Try adding Velcro strips to your mirror as shown so it won’t shift. I placed it inside a makeup bag similar to the one mentioned above. This option allows me to carry a full sized mirror to have on set.

image

image

This same type of case holds my skincare products. I keep them separate from my powders (ie: shadows, pressed powders, pigments) to avoid disaster. I bought mine from http://www.katkitroad.com.

image

Instead of traveling with multiple heavy curling irons, I invested in a set of ceramic wands that feature interchangeable rods. This way, I can roll 3 irons in one simple method. Check out NuMe Curling Wand Sets for an awesome value.

image

image

If you must travel with a lot of lashes, I recommend removing the majority of the plastic packaging and collapsing them onto one another as shown. I keep one plastic cover to keep the front one sanitized. I then load them into a rectangle zip bag also from KatKit.

image

image

Lastly, I always pack my go-bys, inspiration, tear sheets, and face charts so I can have them available on set with me. Keep your magazines together in a cardboard holder as shown. I buy tons of them at the $1 aisle at Target. I place all of my tears and face charts in a file folder and into the same magazine holder.

image

Phew!! Now, if I could only find a solution to not procrastinating….

Happy travels!

Model Features

One of my favorite things is to develop a beauty story.

For me, it allows me to express a feeling or use a color that that is not generally used on the face. It allows me to work intimately with the model and photographer to create a piece. One that doesn’t overshadow the model’s  natural beauty.

I worked with the fabulous Morgan Chidsey to create a small set of beauty images with Chloe after capturing images for her portfolio.

Chloe has a striking face with no need for adornment. Just like all of us, adornment only adds more interest and conversation pieces. A wearable mask.

image

I began by using a powerful color to create an inverted triangle of balance and brought the focal point to her lips. A luscious mulberry shade mixed with a burgundy as a nod to the Marsala color trend. I used Iman Luxury Moisturizing Lipstick in shades Taboo and Black Brandy.

image

image

I progressed by creating gilded eyebrow and lashes in metallic gold. For me it adds a bit of flair and sparkle to your eyes. I misted a mascara wand with MAC Fix + and mixed metallic gold from the Makeup Forever Flash Palette. I then brushed it through the eyebrows and lashes for sparkle.

image

image

image

Lastly, continuing with the metallic inspiration, I created a diffused metallic metal look that represents our inner strength. I diffused a small amount of metallic silver over Chloe as to show if she was exposing the metal underneath. Flashes of blue and green patina were dusted on to create a “lived in” metal look that was starting to tarnish.

image

image

I hope you enjoyed the series and that you are inspire to add a bit flair to your routine:)

Model Features

I had the opportunity to work with beautiful Hailey Krieg last week for a portfolio update.

I met Hailey on one of my first professional photo shoots and she was about 16 years old.  It was an awesome sensation to see she has blossomed as a young lady and model.

Teaming with photographer Roy Choudhury,  we developed a non overworked look that was fresh, edgy, and fashionable. With beautiful details in lace and pattern in the clothing, I completed the look by using Privé Finishing Texture Spray in the hair for manageable volume and texture. To create fullness, I had Hailey flip her hair over and I sprayed the product at the root while gently massaging it in for root lift.

image

Afterwards,  I warmed up a dime sized amount of Bumble and Bumble Sumotech in my hands and scrunched it into the hair to create a bedhead texture. Using this technique is perfect for when you are in a rush or on 2 day old hair since it requires minimal time and effort.

I hope you enjoy this beautifully effortless set!

“Black Lilium” HUF Magazine, January 2015

Published Editorials

I hope the new year is settling in well for you and that you had a flawless holiday.

What a better way to ring in the new year than with a newly published editorial!

We had the opportunity to work with Kelly Gillespie (courtesy of The Kim Dawson Agency in Dallas, Texas) on this project.

The set and styling were very minimal as to evoke clean lines and and sense of bareness. The emotion is a bit more somber and pensive as the winter approaches.  A human left to fend to the elements.  During this photo session,  Kelly magnificently channeled a sense of solitude and minimalism to enhance the clothing styled by Jamie Gorden of Seaminx Managament.

Sooty black, gritty grays, and blown out platinum was our palette for the day so I decided to magnify that by utilizing texture in the hair to create contrast.

image

Generously applying Privé Volumizing Dry Shampoo at the root and blowdrying it as I massaged it in created a “padded” texture for the texture.

image

The hair was then lightly backcombed and sprayed with Privé Finishing Texture Spray to create an airy hold. I love this hair spray because it allows you to control and manipulate the hair without becoming sticky or flakey. Plus the sense is addictive!

The skin was hydrated and primed with Chantecaille Anti Glycation Primer for a flawless and barely there look.

image

The Dior 5 COULEURS COUTURE COLOURS & EFFECTS EYESHADOW PALETTE in 30 Montaigne was used to create contour and highlight since black and white photography was going to be used.

image

Enjoy the rest of the series. Happy 2015!

‘Yesterday Man’ ON Magazine, December 2014 Shop Issue

Published Editorials

Winter is upon us and nothing is more fitting than a cozy and warm feel as shown in this recent editorial.

Isaac Tullis, photographed by Sergio Garcia, evokes the idea of a simpler, relaxed and slightly rugged man. Styled by Jennifer Bingham, Isaac reserved a sense of structure and easy fashion.

Isaac’s hair was kept quite textured but minimal in movement.  A dusting of Osis Dust It Mattifying Texture Powder gave grip, texture, without the need of multiple products.

“Cold Sun”, HUF Magazine December 2014

Published Editorials

Fall is my favorite time of the year. The colors. The smells. The celebrations.  The clothes are finer and people tend to dress up a bit more.

In our recently published editorial in HUF Magazine, Morgan Chidsey photographs Tony Trahan in a serene and gentlemanly estate setting.  The tones and feel of this session give the impression of a young monsieur caught enjoying his manor.

Hints of tweed, denim, velvet, plaid, and houndstooth expertly arranged by Tess Wilcox give a depth and richness to the story.

A debonair gentleman needs a suave hairstyle and groomed skin. I achieved the look by using this set of men’s grooming products.

image

On damp hair, I distributed a few pumps of Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray and AG Beach Bomb to encourage texture and a natural wave to the hair. With the blowdryer set on high, I used the air control nozzle with a clean cotton sock over it to direct diffused air and give the hair a windblown look.

Since we photographed Tony outside, I used a mist of Privé Finishing Texture Spray in the hair for manageable hold.  I love this line because it is apothecary based and has buildable qualities.

For the photos with a smooth and straight pomp, I finger-raked a bit of Privé Créme Coiffante through the hair. This lightweight grooming cream adds shine, body, and texture without weighing the hair down. I finsihed the look with a mist of Aquage Beyond Shine for a bit more gloss.

Great skin on a man is a definite must. I cleansed Tony’s skin with Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser. I love this multipurpose cleanser because it can also be left in the skin for 20 minutes and doubles as a great purifying face masque.

image

The face was then moisturized with Jack Black Double Duty Face Moisturizer. This product is great for all skin types and has SPF 20 which is perfect for outdoor activities.

image

Nails, cuticles,  and lips require attention as well. For this I used, Smith’s Rosebud Salve. Non greasy and right to the point. I love it!

image

I hope you enjoy this set! Stay warm and cozy:)

Simple. Free. Not overworked. Beauty.

These are the adjectives we wanted conjure when we worked with Lily.  Photographed by Sergio Garcia with hair and makeup by yours truly, we were able to create fresh and ethereal looks that showed off our muse’s beauty.

Hair texture was created by misting Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray on dry hair.  This encouraged the natural wave pattern to come forth. After letting it dry, I had the model flip her hair over and generously sprayed Bumble and Bumble Cityswept Spray.

image

image

image

image

image

image

image

For this look, I created a deep on side part to create a “faux” side swept fringe effect. The hair was secured into a low ponytail and wrapped into a simple bun. To add high shine and smooth flyaways, I added a bit if brillantine by Bumble and Bumble.
