“GARDEN OF COLOR” 7Hues Magazine, March 2018

Model Features, Pro Tips/ How-to's, Published Editorials

Spring is finally here! Frocks of color, fields of blooms and creative bounty make you want to go outside and shake off those winter cabin blues.

One of the easiest ways to invite this new season into our lives, is not only wear it but to ingest it. What we take in into our body, mind and soul has a lasting effect on what we exude.

In this latest beauty editorial, I wanted to portray a quirky view of some interesting fruits and veggies and their health benefits. Working alongside Luis Martinez, a beauty photographer based in of Dallas, Texas, we moved the concept along. Beautiful Haley Halter courtesy of The Kim Dawson Agency was our canvas for the day. Calli Martin, the fashion stylist, seamlessly added fashion touches to synchronize every look.

We had a great time shopping for unusual fruits with texture and color. Plus we had a tasty snack after our photoshoot!

Here is Haley on the cover for 7Hues Magazine. Read along to see some cool benefits of each fruit plus inspirational uses of color and product.

First up, is the pomegranate. The most sensual of fruits, the pomegranate is a superfood power house. It has powerful antioxidants which help with aging, it helps with stomach disorders and helps with anemia.

Haley wears MAC Lip Liner in Currant.

Kiwano is a stunning fruit but it also helps fight off signs of aging, it helps reduce evidence of scars and aids in eye health. Extending the eyeliner shape elevated this look and made it avant garde. MAC Chromagraphic Liner in Geniune Orange was used for this piece.

This beautifully deep green helps fight off cancer agents. The Swiss chard helps with lowering blood sugar levels and has vitamins K, A and C. KIKO Milano Free Soul Eyeliner in Limitless Forest was used to enhance the water line.

Famous as a dip, the artichoke is best eaten without all the cream cheese. It helps lower bad cholesterol, has tons of fiber and prevents inflammation. I love working with creams around the eye are for fast and impactful color deposit. I used Makeup Firever Flash Palette to transition all these colors together.

This cool fruit is thought to have the highest concentration of vitamin A. The Korean Melon has carotenoids which give the skin it’s color. You can have beautiful glow and pigment to your skin by adding these to your diet. This artistic approach to color was achieved by layering colors, lightest to darkest, by running my finger back and forth on a dense synthetic fan brush loaded with varying hues of MAC Pro Performance HD Airbrush.

Dragonfruit is a superfood that is full of multiple benefits. It has phytonutrients like vitamin B and C, and good fatty acids to help with cholesterol.

Passion fruit explodes with flavor but it is loaded with antioxidants. It helps your skin and combats against free radicals (they cause aging). P.s. Eat the seeds for added fiber and protein. For an intense and saturated color block shadow, I used Danessa Myricks Color Fix in Tribe.

Starfruit is not only exotic looking but it is packed full of Vitamin C. It helps with your immune system and mood. A fun star accent was used in this scene using NYX Cosmetics Suede Matte Liner.

Lastly, Rambutan is a strange looking fruit but the inside is sweet like a grape. (Other than making earrings out it as we did with wardrobe stylist Calli Martin) it is good for anti aging, it helps with pregnancy dizzy spells, and boosts energy.

I hope that you enjoyed learning a bit more about these delicious and peculiar fruits and gift inspired by their color as much as we did!

‘VISCOUS BEAUTY’ Ellements Magazine, November 2016

Published Editorials

As a child, I remember playing outside on a hot summer day and being distracted by mysterious rings of color on the ground. Faint mirages and nuances that would appear and dissappear depending on the angle I stood over them.
As an adult, especially on rainy days, those same rings appear often and remind me of my childlike wonder of those apparitions. Oil spills are generally not regarded as beautiful or beneficial. To an artist like me, however, they have always caught my attention due to their prismatic color effects.

This fueled the development of a beauty series photographed during my latest visit to Los Angeles. Michael Dirlam a wonderful friend and beauty photographer helped bring this to life. Kate Harrison courtesy of Freedom LA Models powerfully carries tones and nuances alluding to this effect.

Hydrophilic skin, glossy textures and metallic reflects all create an ethereal air to these makeup looks.

The skin was prepared using a blend of balms and squalane oil to create a hyper moisturized effect. Giorgio Armani Prima Glow On Moisturizing Balm was my go-to product of choice because it maintains the same glow throughout the day.

Eyelids were bathed in light washes of silver, pewter, salmon, verdigris and charcoal.

OCC Makeup Loose Colour Concentrates in Clove, Datura and Jubilee were pressed into the eyelid area immediately after moisturizing the area as to preserve the moisture effect behind the pigment.

To mirror the effect that a fresh oil spill evokes, I layered more pigments in different hues around the eyes and patted a generous layer of Kevyn Aucoin The Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss.

I love this product for its lightweight non-tacky texture. It transforms any eyeshadow or pigment into a high shine patent leather texture. I like to warm it up with my fingertips and then gently pat on the area of the face that will show off most light.

One of the most impactful features of this story are these opalescent and rich black inky lips. I used BITE Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Black Truffle

This was layered with the Kevyn Aucoin The Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss and then I gently pressed a mixture of pigments into the center of the lips as to create a highlighted effect.

I hope this inspires you to go out and experiment with the textures that surround you. Enjoy the rest of the editorial below!

“ALONG THE LINES” with Jorge Rivas and Allison Ponthier

Model Features

How does the old adage go? “Don’t reinvent the wheel?” “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it?”

Although that may apply in some situations, that never applies to beauty! Especially eyeliner.

In this session photographed in New York City by my talented friend and photographer Jorge Rivas, we explore the possibilities of angles and lines. I have always been drawn to the need of making things symmetrical and then turning around to destroy it. It’s a known issue and I’m working on it:)

Liner is one of the easiest ways to “dress up” your face. Feline flicks. avant garde geometry, dots, smokey, vertical, diagonal. The possibilities are endless. It is my belief that every woman can wear liner when the correct one is chosen for their eye shape and occasion. One thing that helps me understand trends is looking at catwalk photos.

The looks can be minimal or full on lined. That is up to you. Here are a few tricks I find help me and that will help you ease the nerves.

1.If you end up with wings that don’t match up, start by drawing two dots at the point where you want your liner to END. As you line, you will know exactly where you have to end the lines when you draw them.

2. Make sure you chose the correct product and tool for you. If you want a diffused liner like this, a soft crayon liner or shadow will do the trick. Make sure to blend into the lash line with a cotton bud for better staying power and polished feel. My favorite soft pencils are NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via De Martelli for a soft cool brown shadow and Chanel Le Crayon Yeaux in Noir for a creamy pencil that glides along the sensitive water line.

If you want a bolder and sharper look, try using a liner pen like Maybelline Line Stiletto Ultimate Precision Liquid Eyeliner. The advantage to this is that you can just use it as you would any writing utensil to create precise lines. To create more abstract lines or shapes, a gel cream liner with angled brush like Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner is perfect.

image

The newest trend in eyeliner is “tight lining”. This involves lining the inner rim of the eyes to create a deep and sooty look. Try using a waterproof and safe for the inner eye product like Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner. Raise your chin and place your nondominant index finger above the outer corner of your eye, lifting upward. Then, holding the pencil vertically in your other hand, trace back and forth under your lashes. Go over it a few times, and stop before you reach the inner corners to ensure your eyes don’t look closed off and tiny. Repeat on the bottom rim and finish with a healthy dose of volumizing mascara.

3. Darken the roots of your top lashes. Gently pull your top lid taut by pressing one finger on the outer corner. Bury the tip of the pencil deep into your lashes at the outer corner of your eye, wiggling it back and forth as you move inward. Take your time and don’t be afraid to really mash the tip into your lashes.

If you move during the tricky lining part or make the lines too thick for your taste, don’t fret. It’s just makeup! I LOVE to clean up with Almay Oil Free Makeup Eraser Sticks. They are in a convenient cotton bud solution and will not disturb the rest of your makeup.

Now that you know the pro tips and tricks, please enjoy this session as we did while creating it!

Allison Ponthier, of RE:Quest Models NYC, has perfect skin! In order to prepare her for her closeup, I cleansed the skin with my favorite micellar water, KohGenDo Spa Water and Organic Cotton and moisturized with Kensignton Apothecary Pure Soothing Facial Oil #3.

Vivacious. Flirty. Edgy.

These are some of the feelings that Nina Shaw evoked during our latest session photographed by Samantha Beatty.

Rich and textured clothing curated by Carlos Parada of OnSet Management set the tone for a beautiful and demure palette. Soft leather, shiny gold, fluffy wool, and structured silks created a backdrop for exotic hair and makeup looks.

Satin shadows in muted brown based violets were paired with a nude glossy lip to complement the structured look.  For this I used Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad in Disco Dust. Shape the eye by concentrating the darkest tone of this palette along the lashline and outer corner of the eye.

_11777438

Reminiscent of Naomi Campbell during the glamorous decade of the supermodel, we decided to amp up the look in with a dramatic smokey eye and wine colored gloss.  My favorite of the moment is Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Lacquer in Night Berry. I love the hybrid technology of a lip gloss, stain, and lipstick this product offers. The shade range is beautiful as well.

3614270619557_Ecstasy-Lacquer_200

Juxtaposing a shattered and weathered bob against the sumptuousness of this ostrich leather dress by Alice and Olivia was one of my favorite highlights of this session.  In order to achieve this arid and collapsible hair texture, I power blow dried the hair using Bumble and bumble Surf Spray in order to give a gritty and almost sand weathered texture.  The hair was then detailed with Kevin Murphy Rough.Rider for a strong and super matte hold.

LOVE THE SKIN YOU ARE IN!

Uncategorized

As I sit here and sanitize my makeup kit, this PSA comes to mind.

My kit contains a total of 54 different mixable shades and tones of skin color. They have all been tapped into and have made me realize that I would be lost without all of them. Each nuance. Each variation has shown me the power of beauty.

Please, if you do nothing else today, hug and love yourself and be proud of your skin.  You were made perfectly and in an image that is not erroneous.

Heat wave.

Two words that make leaving my perfectly air conditioned home almost impossible. Makeup runs, hair falls, skin gets dehydrated and moodiness abounds.

Not all hope is lost though. Beauty can take a relaxed and non structural ease. A nonchalant feel is a good staple. If all else fails, you can always hang out by the pool for a couple of hours. Relaxation is key.

In this recent beauty series featuring Sidney Jamison, we showcased easy but impactful beauty filled with impactful textures, colors, and easiness. The photographs by Chris Ossenfort perfectly capture Sidney’s striking beauty.

Sidney’s skin was prepared using Koh Gen Do Oriental Plant Essence. This serum plumps the skin while not leaving it sticky or heavy.

image

The face was then moisturized with a cocktail of Koh Gen Do All in One Refresh Gel and Dior Glow Maximizer Primer. I found that this mixture moisturizes, primes, protects and gives radiance to the skin in one step. I love this moisturizer because it’s cooling for the hot summer day.

image

image

Dipping in and out of the pool feels amazing during the hot months but your hair and skin might not appreciate it as much.  My current favorite hair and skin moisturizer is Leonor Greyl Huile Secret de Beaute Or. The smell is intoxicating and the lipids in this oil create a barrier against the elements without ever feeli g to greasy.

I hope you this series as much as we did while creating it!

Summer is finally starting to settle in. Bright and long sunny days make it so easy to enjoy the outdoors and have a more laissez-faire attitude towards beauty.

We recently worked with beautiful Elizabeth in a series showcasing lovely and feminine clothing in a setting that was like a small Secret Garden. Photographed by Shannon Touchstone and styled by Danielle Brown, Elizabeth easily transitioned into a very soft and almost playful self.

Because we were photoshooting outside in very humid weather, I decided to work with nature’s canvas and utilize the dewiness in her skin and flyaways to add a carefree almost bohemian feel to her look.

Her hair was was prepped with Bumble and Bumble Prep Spray and City Swept Spray to reveal texture, prime it for the waving wand heat, and to add a bit of weight.

image

image

The hair was then waved with a Paul Mitchell Neuro Unclipped 1.25″ Cone counterclockwise in the same direction away from the face beginning at the front hairline.

image

image

The hair was then finger raked to loosen the waves. I added two pumps of Wella Oil Reflections to add shine, reveal highlights and lowlights in her hair color and to add a bit of polish. I also used this lightweight non greasy oil on her legs and arms for a subtle glow.

image

Elizabeth has great skin and I wanted to enhance with a bit solar protection and color. I used Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Medium in the center of the face and shade Medium/Deep on the perimeter of the face to add a bit of lived in tan effect.

image

image

The lips and cheeks were tinted with YSL Volupte Tint-In-Oil in shades Drive Me Copper and Oh My Gold. I love these lip tints for a sheer wash of color with a non sticky feel. No lipliner needed!

image

Summer is all about being social with a casual and easy breezy feel. I hope you enjoy these products as much I did!

VAGABOND featuring Tony Trahan

Model Features

Gathering inspiration from our surroundings is a given when it comes to creating. Nature, books, and media can offer literally thousands of images to spark endless hours of day dreaming.

Sometimes beauty ideals can be derived from less than likely sources. For me, there is a certain beauty in being nomadic. Transient. To be alone with your thoughts and your experiences. Sun burnt skin, waxen locks, and stubble that has become a fashionable welcome into your routine.

image

image

image

image

These nuances take center stage in this beautiful series featuring Tony Trahan. Vintage clothing sourced by fashion stylist Jamie Gorden elevated the mood photographed by Calvin VonDara.

Tony’s hair (which was a fun extension project to achieve the length) was styled to create a lived in wavy, ropey, almost dread-locked effect. My go to product for this effect is Wella Ocean Spritz Texture Spray. I mist the midshaft and ends of dry hair until damp. I then dried the hair with a diffuser on a low setting. I repeated these steps 3 times in order to achieve a lived in effect.

image

image

image

Skin that has been parched, weathered, and bronzed by the scorching sun has a certain beauty to it as well. There is an increase in pigment that has a ruddines to it. I achieved this effect by first protecting Tony’s skin with my favorite primer containing SPF, Chantecaille Anti Glycation SPF Primer.

image

To emulate the rudiness on his skin, I decided to layer various veils or washes of color for a non powdery effect.

I began by stippling and buffing a BB Cream 3 shades warmer that his skin around the perimeter of his face. I used Maybelline Fresh BB in Shade Medium/Deep with a MAC Duo Fibre .

image

I used the same brush with the remaining product and buff a small amount of Dior Nude Air Tan in Shades Cinnamon and Golden Honey.  I found that if the dual fibre brush was damp, it almost melted the already satin product into the skin. I distributed the colors as shown in the pattern diagrammed below.

image

image

I hope you enjoy the series as much as we did while creating it!

VINTAGE BEAUTY WITH A MODERN TAKE

Model Features

There seems to a bit of nostalgia in every generation. The Roaring Twenties alluded to the Belle Époque while Post WWII America desperately tried to garner glamour in a way we have yet to see again in my opinion.

Dressing was not only necessary but an ultimate form of manners. Polite society was coiffed, pressed, and polished. Everyone followed suit regardless of socioeconomic differences.

One of my favorite resources of inspiration is to refer to vintage and retro cosmetic ads. They offer a hyper feminine point of view to me.

image

image

image

image

image

During this mini series photographed by Roy Choudhury, I wanted to explore a color palette reminiscent of these images with slightly different placement. Our model, Mary Alexandra, offered a perfect canvas for this.

Using YSL Pure Chromatics Quad in #6, I contoured the middle and outer portion of the eye to offer a more rounded shape to the eye.

image

A gentle slope in the winged liner anchored the look.

image

Variations in tones and palette allowed me to create different looks and feels.
A healthy application of YSL Lipstick Pur in Le Orange was an update to the tried and true blue based red.

image

image

image

Lastly, a deep aubergine and plum lip stick custom mixed by mixing a bit of black pencil eyeliner into a classic red.

I hope you enjoyed this series as much as we did while creating it. Try these combinations on your next look!

|MÍNIMALISMO| featuring Regan Kemper

Model Features

Subtle nuances in tone and structure take center stage on this beauty series featuring beautiful Regan Kemper courtesy of the Kim Dawson Agency. Photographed perfectly in black and white by Sergio Garcia, it shows the power of simplicity.

Graceful strokes of black, white and charcoal against a clean and bare faced Regan almost seem to melt into her visage.

image

Because we were photographing in black and white, I used carbon blacks and red to photograph as intense black and greys to create shade.

image

A mixture of Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk and soft hold hairspray was mixed into a paste and then brushed thru the fringe area to evoke moment, contrast and texture

image

image

A red lip liner was used to define the lips and create a sharp and moody pout.

image

image

Lastly, an interesting block graphic cream liner in black added a little flair. I used a small piece of gentle masking tape to ensure that edges were straight on such a movable surface.

image

Try it on your next photoshoot or selfie! Play around with colors and see how they look when photographed in black and white.

Enjoy!:)
